As a Decorative Painting teacher, Bobbie Pearcy had a dilemma: How to help her students understand the difference in the various paint colors. There is confusion because the major brands have different names for the same color and/or the same name for different colors.
She tried several methods: to arrange her containers in order of color value. To accomplish this meant intermixing the jars, bottles, and tubes of the various brands. She soon discovered she was not the only one struggling with this problem.
She painted several swatches of one brand on the outer edge of white poster board and then hand lettered the name. After many hours of work she developed the first prototype of what is known today as the Tru-Color Comparison Disc. The squares became circles of different sizes. When stacked smallest on top with a center post, she had four rings of handpainted swatches, 100's of colors all within inches of the other.
She invested some money and a great amount of time and effort to paint several discs herself. To test the idea, she rented booth space at the National Society of Tole and Decorative Painters Annual Convention. They were all purchased by avid painters and teachers because they solved an immense problem. Thus, Bobbie's Tru-Color System was born.
Today, more discs are purchased than Bobbie can paint by herself . . . but with a little assistance from others . . . every swatch is still handpainted by a person with a brush.
